Cats I Have Known – Heidi
I’ve always had an affinity with cats – if one crosses my path as I’m walking down the road, I’ll stoop down to scratch it behind the ears. I’ve sometimes wondered whether being a cat-person is largely due to growing up with cats, or whether my personality is such that I just seem to be…

Present Tense Book Review – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Part 3
(Part Two of this Present Tense Book Review.) Dern it, this book is blame’ long. Reckon it seems so b’kase I has to read the words slow-like, to git ther meanin’. Still entertaining, even though it’s more of the same, with a nice quote from the King: “Hain’t we got all the fools in town…

A most excellent black-and-white bear
On the day that the Giant Panda genome is released, I was surprised to discover that the animal was unknown in Europe until 1869. The best bit is the quote by Armand David, the zoologist priest who first scientifically recorded its existence, describing it as a “most excellent black-and-white bear”.

Present Tense Book Review – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Part 2
(Part One of this Present Tense Book Review.) Another 10 chapters down, and Huck’s had an implausible number of exciting and life-threatening adventures. Fun, but shot through with darker themes, of childhood illness, and deadly feuds; and slavery, obviously. It’s hardly ground-breaking to state that Twain’s writing is brilliant, but it is – I enjoy…

Present Tense Book Review – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
I quite enjoyed writing my last present tense book review, and I think it made me consider the book with a more critical eye. So I’m doing it again with Huck Finn, by Mark Twain. I can very vaguely remember it being on TV, but all I can recall is Huck trying to get out…

Present Tense Book Review – Bulldog Drummond: Part 4
(Part Three of this Present Tense Book Review.) I’ve now finished the book, and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes a well-written, undemanding thriller. Some aspects of the book seem a little sadistic for my bleeding-heart, liberal tastes, and some of the attitudes of the lead character (and, presumably, author) are xenophobic and right-wing.…

Present Tense Book Review – Bulldog Drummond: Part 3
(Part Two of this Present Tense Book Review.) Many adventure novels sag a bit in the middle, but Sapper has kept up the pace up with a kidnap subplot and the introduction of a set of Drummond’s old army pals, who make the plot slightly more credible (i.e. it’s not just one man against an…

Present Tense Book Review – Bulldog Drummond: Part 2
(Part One of this Present Tense Book Review.) Mid-way through Chapter 3 and the tension is building nicely; Drummond has done some verbal sparring with the villains, and got to fire off his colt. Chapter 2 opens with a splendid breakfast request by Drummond: “I almost think, James, that I could toy with another kidney.” And part…
